Over the last couple weeks of class we have been talking about the hunger games and relating readings, media and themes. I believe that these all bring up the idea of what is entertainment to us these days. Over decades it seems like it is taking more and more to entertain us. Where will we be in the future and will there be something to satisfy our crave for this thing we call entertainment?
Entertainment to us is not what it once was. If I would ask an older person what their favorite scary movie was when they were a kid, I would probably find it really dumb or even funny. I believe that entertainment is in a way a form of evolution. By that I mean that like we see a scary movie and then we get used to seeing other ones like that. After awhile those kind of movies do not even phase us anymore and we become bored. Because of this we then seek find find a scarier movie to quench our thirst of entertainment.
The idea of entertainment being a form of evolution does not only apply to scary movies but other things as well like drama and comedy etc. This helps to answer the big question are we not yet entertained? I believe for the time being we are entertained but only for a short while. Eventually we will need to seek for more and more until we get satisfied. Who knows if we will always be able to quench our thirst for this thing we call entertainment or where this will take us in the future.
Alex, good post. I agree with what you mentioned about Entertainment pretty much evolving over time. If you ask any parent what scary movies were like growing up, they would most definitely not mention that there were limbs being torn off, that there was blood everywhere, or dead bodies. This just wasn't appropriate to show back then. We fast forward to 2011, where it's okay to show people get stabbed, or dismembered. We keep becoming more desensitized and this isn't a good path to be traveling down.
ReplyDeleteI really Liked your post. Honestly, I think it may be my favorite post so far. I Like that you thought of entertainment as a form of evolution. I've never considered that, but it makes perfect sense. Yeah, I know that my parents thought the Blob was scary, but i thought it seemed dumb. When I was little, I though "The Mummy" was scary with the creepy bugs that crawled up your skin, and honestly, I've never finished that movie because it terrified me so. But yeah, I really do wonder what the entertainment of the future will be. I'm sure if i knew what it would be now, I'd be shocked and in disbelief. Anyways, Awesome post Alex!
ReplyDeleteI like the way you thought of entertainment as an evolution that is such a good description of it.It does evolve.. we get bored with what we watch so we change it we format it to fit our growing tolerance for gore and violence and every other form of entertainment. We have built up such tolerance to things that had once been scary or funny or romantic, we continually need more more and more. I think this was a really good post and I liked how you went about it.
